LEGENDS

Saturday was an exciting day, despite the fact that three of the matches were friendly and one was a dead rubber. Four wins always cheer me up. A 12 - 10 result for The Colts against a good Linlithgow side was the starter on the day followed by the A’s comfortably beating Dunfermline 1 XV 48 -10 with excellent performances all round and then the mighty Schrees demolished Ross High 2nd XV 68 -0.

Finally, the first team put in a strong effort with a 45-17  win over a determined Selkirk in preparation for the big one next Saturday against Accies. Jamie Forbes outstanding as fly half.

It was all my pleasure to welcome three genuine legends to the Club, John Cox with 241 appearances, Richard Snedden with 253 appearances and, topping them all , Ross Weston with 270 appearances including one this year against Jedforest albeit for 1 minute 32 seconds!

All three were presented with their honour caps at lunch and had a great time by all accounts.

200 appearances is a very tough milestone to hit given the chances of injury these days. All three have shown remarkable longevity although this needs to be put in perspective with one of the Selkirk players having achieved more than 400 appearances!

Sadly for one of our own, the time has come to call it a day. Gregor Hunter has been one of our top players for a number of years, an outstanding fly half with a wonderful left boot.  It is desperately sad that due to a number of head injuries, he has wisely decided to call it a day. Our sincere best wishes go to you Gregor, your wife Lynsey and young son Jamie for the future. Thank you.

Fergus Scott is also moving on. I first met Fergus Scott as a young lad of 7 or 8. He was playing for Currie with my eldest son Scott, under the fatherly guidance of Andy Bogle. Fergus was always the leader. His work ethic was exemplary, and it was no surprise when he took on the role of Captain, right through to a wonderful win in the final of the U18s in 2010.

A highly mobile hooker, he was perhaps never quite big enough for full-time professional rugby. However, in his years at Glasgow Warriors he gave it his full shot. On his return to Currie, he rightly became captain and was very successful both at hooker and later when he moved to the back row.

As Development Officer, Fergus has used all his natural determination and enthusiasm to make a huge success not only with the schools, but in developing the club’s women’s section; he has been an integral part of the Club’s development over recent years.

He is now moving on to pastures new, out with rugby, and I have no doubt he will make significant achievements whatever he does. Fergus, thank you from all at the Club and best wishes for success in whatever the future may bring.

Rhys Davies cracked his 100th appearance on Saturday with an outstanding performance as per usual. Rhys has lead from the front since he took over as Captain and we wish him and the team all the best in the semi finals. I, for one, can’t wait. See you 3pm on Saturday.
