A Gentleman

I spent the weekend at my sister’s seeing my mother who is in a care home. Job done on Saturday and found myself in a position to live feed the Currie v Accies game so settled down in front of a log burning stove with a large glass of beer.

It is amazing how far technology has come in such a relatively short time. I remember as a boy the amazement of a calculator and the realisation that long division was a thing of the past. My first computer bought in 1993 was an Escom DX 33 for £1,500, a huge amount in those days. However the thing that made me most proud was that I doubled up on my Memory to - wait for it- 8 Ram! Surely technology could not get any more advanced or that is what I thought until I tried to load Windows 95 and my whole computer froze solid!

I thought of this as I desperately tried to access the livestream on Saturday only to find that a bad signal would frustrate me all afternoon. I had to resort to Twitter for regular updates. I can tell you the disappointment is even more acute when the message pops up to say we have been beaten with the last kick of the game. Very frustrating!

The much loved and highly respected Doddie Weir very sadly passed away at the weekend. I met Doddie back in, I think 2015, shortly before he was diagnosed with the wretched disease MND. He spoke at a fund raising dinner for the Club at Murrayfield and I understand from Ian Gidney that he also spoke on a couple of occasions in 2007.

What struck me listening to him speak was that he was a complete natural, no notes, no prepared lines just a personal rapport with the audience. Everybody loved it.

Afterwards he was very complimentary about Currie and you knew he was being genuine. He was an absolute gentleman and a truly lovely man as evidenced by the thousands of responses both personal and public. Chieftains will join with me in offering our sincere condolences to the Weir family. Doddie will be very sadly missed by everybody.
