To be elected Vice President of Currie Chieftains RFC is an enormous honour and a very proud moment for me. My association with this club goes back almost four decades, and when I look back at the journey rugby has taken me on, Currie has always remained a hugely important part of my life.

I first joined the club in 1987 as a player. From those early days at Currie, rugby gave me opportunities and friendships that would shape a large part of my life. I later moved to Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand and then to Lethbridge in Canada to further my rugby career, gaining experiences in different rugby cultures that I have always valued.

On the representative side, I was fortunate to play for Edinburgh Under-21s and Scotland Under-21s, before progressing to play for Edinburgh. In 1992, I was selected for the full Scotland squad - something that remains one of the proudest achievements of my playing career.

However, rugby has never just been about what happens on the pitch. Over the years I have been fortunate to hold a number of roles within Currie, including Head of Youth Rugby and coach of the 2nd XV. Each role has allowed me to give something back to a club that has given me so much.

To now be asked to represent Currie Chieftains as Vice President feels like the pinnacle of my involvement with the club so far. It is a position I accept with great pride, but also with a real sense of responsibility.

For me, one of the most important parts of the role will be supporting our President, Jestyn Davis. Jestyn has done a fantastic job in helping to pull the club together, working closely with the Rugby Board and others across Currie Chieftains. I want to do everything I can to support him and help continue that positive work.

I am also delighted to be working alongside our fellow newly promoted Vice President, Scott Gammie. Between us, I believe we can bring energy, experience and a genuine passion for Currie Chieftains to the roles.

Nothing in rugby - or in running a successful rugby club - is ever easy. There will always be challenges. I see our job as being visible, approachable and positive ambassadors for Currie Chieftains, promoting the club in every way we can and helping to make it stronger both on and off the field.

A major priority must be to continue strengthening our player group and growing our membership. We want Currie Chieftains to be a club where players want to play, where supporters want to spend their time, where families feel welcome and where former players remain part of the club long after their playing days are over.

We are particularly fortunate to have a very strong Legends group. These former players, coaches, supporters and friends carry an enormous amount of history, experience and affection for the club. I want us to continue engaging with them, bringing them closer to the current club and making sure that their connection with Currie Chieftains remains strong.

Currie Chieftains is about far more than one team or one generation. It is about everyone who has pulled on the jersey, coached a team, volunteered, supported from the touchline, helped behind the scenes or simply called the club home.

From joining Currie as a player in 1987, through the opportunities rugby gave me around the world, to coaching and helping with youth rugby, the club has been a constant thread throughout my rugby life. To now serve it as Vice President is something I am immensely proud of.

I look forward to working with Jestyn, Scott, the Rugby Board, our players, coaches, volunteers, members, supporters and Legends to help take Currie Chieftains forward while always respecting the history, friendships and values that make this club so special.

“It is a privilege to have played for Currie, a responsibility to serve it, and an honour to represent it as Vice President.”
